Military suicides hit a record high in 2012, with nearly one active-duty service member killing himself every day, according to figures obtained this month by The Associated Press. Last year, 349 active-duty service members killed themselves, a 16 percent rise over the previous year. Those figures don’t include former service members, such as Guzzo, and they don’t differentiate between those afflicted with PTSD and those who may have committed suicide for other reasons. “We really didn’t think he’d make it through the first couple years,” Robert John Guzzo said. “As time passed, he seemed to have better days than the first couple days he got back from Iraq.” Guzzo left the service in May 2008. Although his condition seemed to improve over time, he struggled with certain trigger events. One of those was Veterans Day, and that would lead to his ultimate demise. Guzzo was drinking heavily with two Navy corpsmen when he shot himself. “If we could just keep one person from going down the same road, it will be a success,” Robert John Guzzo said. “They may look OK on the surface, and they may say they’re OK, but you’ve got to really get in there and try to understand what they’re going through.” RIP Guzzo
