I have been given a 12-gauge Damascus shotgun that my grandfather owned, and has been handed down through the family over the years. I believe it is circa 1890 or so. I don't want to use it, as today's loads will probably give the twisted steel barrel some problems. My question is: does anyone know the value? And does anyone have recommendations as to where I can send it off to be restored? I'm thinking it's a 'hanger'....something for over the fireplace.

Zimmer71,
Your quite correct not to use modern ammunition. Do not fire this shotgun. If you could provide an image it would be helpful for me to be more accurate. However a Field grade 12 gauge Damascus with dbl. trigger could run as high as $799. I'm guessing much less, I am afraid.
In my humble opinion, save your hard earned cash and don't restore the finish. If it's going to be enjoyed as a mantle decoration, they make wonderful conversation pieces. Enjoy it for what it is, a family keepsake. Thank you for your post.
