I was wondering if any one knew of a good ratio to load a magazine w/ tracers vrs regular ammo 8 to 1 or 6 to one? or whatever?

I don't really know. but I was tought 2 to 1. My brother always said I would burn the rifling right out of my barrel doing so, but maybe I'm more in danger of waisting my tracers?

Tracey,
I have always used every fifth round as a tracer when in a specific situation...anything more I have come to believe causes damage after a period of time, but then again it depends on semi or full auto fire and the types of rifle barrels being utilized....

If tracer ammunition is provided as a steady diet, the rifling will deteriorate rapidly. That said, tracers are usually loaded between one in four rounds to one in six rounds. During certain conflicts, is was common for platoon leaders will load their magazines entirely of tracers to facilitate the ability to identify tango locations for their men to converge on. Tracers work both ways and if use during a strategically even fire fight one should implement a fire and move strategy. For combatants on the receiving end of tracer ammunition, there is a optical illusion phenomenon, whereby the tracer rounds will appear to be traveling slowly and increase velocity as the round approaches. Besides guiding the shooter's direction of fire, tracer rounds can also be loaded at the end of a magazine to remind the shooter that the magazine is almost empty. This is particularly useful in weapons that do not lock the bolt back when empty as in firearms such as the AK-47.

In Veitnam our M60s were loaded 5 to 1 but when your as scared as I was it looked like a lazer beam. Don't even like to think of the barrels we burned up.
