Am interested in finding the best caliber to use for long range ( 1000 yds ) competition. Am concerned about barrel wear and cost of rounds as well as accuracy. Any one have any thoughts on this ?

I like the .308 myself. Its an all around utility cartridge. That or the 30-06. I am not a 1000 yrd shooter however.

Great point Gen. cp, In the navy,we did 100 yds. With M-14; M16 I shot 300 yds a few times. M16. 300 you need to be a rock. i was not so good at 300. my favorite was my 12 gauge. Close is better for me. With my .45,dead on at 25 ft. Next to dead on at 60. My first 3 shots are all ways my best

I went out to the rang with a friend to site in his 300 mag and i brought my m-14 with iron sites and he was siteing at 300 yards with a scope he had a nice tight grouping while I was on paper so is that good ??

Luck favors the prepared Soldier. I think one makes their luck. In any case, good shooting partner.

You're welcome Soldier, I would be honored to provide marksmanship coaching. Perhaps, one day the two of us can sit down over a box of ammo and throw lead together. Take this to heart Cpmag, the key to accuracy is 'Disciplined Consistency'. I want you to do handle your firearms the same way ALL the time, every time. Load and insert the mags, pick up the weapon, mount it, line up the sights, create your sight picture, take your cleansing breaths, one deep breath and let half of it out and finally... squeeze the trigger like an eye dropper. Be surprised when the trigger breaks. Never anticipate the shot, never. All actions must be identical every time! Discipline and consistency. I will send you a PDF file document that I have created by email. I provide this document to all my students. Please let me know if you have any questions.
