Sleeper, I have an answer that you're not going to like very much. My sources have informed me to let all our RnG membership know that ammo prices will be going up again January 1st 2008. Manufacturers such as Federal Ammunition for example will have a 10-20 percent price increase. If anybody thinks ammo pricing is going back down or level off any time soon, forget it. No. 8 shot go from $28 a bag wholesale to $45 in just 5 months. The Rank and file of RnG better be stocking up......the future looks grim and I do not even want to think about Hillary sitting in the oval office..... I read a report recently that electrical cabling and wiring products were looking at dramatic price increases due to worldwide copper prices. There isn't a shortage of copper as far as I know.... it's just that the supply of cheap copper the past few decades is being intentionally reduced to raise prices. This is a business move, as one company now controls most of the world's supply. It's an American company, by the way. I know out there in the desert Southwest a couple of copper mines that were closed years ago due to low prices are getting ready to start up again and locally anyway that's good news and more jobs. Also, demand has increased due to the war, yes some, and due to everyone around the world now stockpiling ammunition in anticipation of what may come. The jump in Brass and Lead have seen a 20% increase in the last year. Are you listening? (THAT's Copper, Brass, Lead) What really is creating demand is the massive industrialization of countries like India and China, which are electrifying and networking on a scale never seen before, also creating the world's largest users of energy and polluters in the process. Military 'surplus' is not drying up, it's actually being manufactured in greater volumes, it's just that governments are buying everything and of course we must assume other well-funded groups are buying too, particularly fanatics who want to destroy America. This has been a great economic boon to Russia, Yugoslavia, Poland and several other former Soviet-bloc countries that have big factories making 7.62x39 and many other calibers. I just bought 1K rounds of .223 & 7.62x39. 500 rounds of 9mm & .45ACP this last weekend. I found a deal, any order over $200 - free shipping. I still need to locate a deal on .38 spl. & .357 Mag.
Take care, stock up, conserve ammo... shoot straight gentleman!

What would be considered a good stockpile of ammo for each caliber weapon....I believe I read once or heard from someone, not sure, getting to old, but my understanding is that if you stockpile more then a certain amount of ammo you can be in violation of atf rules or some rules either state of Federal...any thoughts.....

I know that here in San Diego County, CA. About 2 months ago, a person was arrested after his house caught on fire. The reason that the media gave for the arrest was not that he had a truck load of different Rifles n Guns (All CA legal), but for the vast amount of ammunition that he had in his basement. It was heartbreaking seing the feds taking all of them rifles, guns and ammo. The picture that I saw of the front yard of the house with all the crates of ammo was a gun lover's dream. But then again, there is a limit on how much ammo you can keep in your residence. I don't know if it is a City, County, State or federal law. I am leaning more with federal because ATF was all over the pictures.

The thing is I shoot often at the range we have here, actually I bet almost half of the town I live in shoots at this range..it is an out door range and it is one that is extremely well maintained and I would put it up there with ranges the police uses, as a matter of fact the police and other law enforecment agencies uses our range often...there is an annual fee but well worth it....anyways my concern is that when I order through ups a 1k at a time often will I get looked at when I shoot most of it either hunting or target practice....maybe the best way is to buy your ammo at gun shows but then again gun shows are about to become a thing of the past if the left side keeps up with their anti gun attacks, no pun intended.....

chaindriven I concur w/ your analysis, especially the developing countries such as china devouring a huge amount of precious metals and energy resources to fuel their unprecedented growth . Which all gives me great concern. the other question about how much ammo would be a sufficient amount is a good one. i dont know the answer to that. i was wondering that perhaps in the future, if you find good ammo deals that perhaps you could post them here for other members to take advantage of them. Free shipping when you order a few thousand rdns is a good deal. Just a thought. So what Ive gleaned thus far from this thread is that we need to buy ammo now , dont delay bc the price is inevitably going to go up

Roger That, when I come across another ammo deal, I'll post it here. I have a show coming up in two weeks. I have three full printer paper boxes, with over 4000 empty cases of sorted brass to exchange for reloads. (benefit of working at a pistol range)

Found a great price on 5.56 NATO ammunition www.ableammo.com/catalog/default.phpFederal Ammunition (LC) XM193, 5.56mm, Metal Case Boat-Tail, 55 GR, 3250 fps, 20 Rd / Box /10 plus boxes @ $7.18 each Stock # STK68258 1000 RDS = $359.00 Please Note:With the appearance of full military 5.56 ammunition on the commercial Market, it has come to the attention of the Ammunition Manufacturers' Institute (SAAMI) that the use of military 5.56mm ammunition in sporting rifles chambered for Caliber .223 Remington cartridges can lead to higher-than-normal chamber pressures and possible hazards for the firearm, its user and bystanders. Tests have confirmed that chamber pressures in a sporting rifle may be significantly higher in the same gun when using military 5.56mm ammunition rather than commercially loaded Caliber .223 Remington cartridges, according to SAAMI.

Price increases on just about everything is getting out of hand for those of us who are on fixed incomes, but, what do you do about it. You find the best deals and buy all that you can. The gun store that I purchase most of my ammo has tried to keep his prices as low as possible and still make a profit. I can still purchase a case of Blazer 45 ACP 1000 rounds for $279.00, which is very good these days.
Thanks to Chaindriven for all the data on ammo prices that are going on throughout the world. But, one thing we all know it isn't going to get any better with the demand high. I just know that I keep at least three cases of 45 ACP on hand when I find the price that is right as I know the next case will go up. I know that I could buy Wolf Ammo quite cheap, but, it doesn't work well in my 45's. So, that rules the cheaper stuff out in my case. We do have a custom ammo maker here in Alabama that makes me up 45 ACP, .38 special, .357 Mag and .40. We save our brass and turn it into him and we get a good price for tha ammo. But, it isn't inexpensive to shoot anymore, but, as long as I can afford it I will keep shooting.

Lieutenant Colonel Bullseye, I am finding that my purchases are close to retail prices of eighteen months ago. Shooting a minimum of two hours a week with leagues on Saturday morning and Tuesday night. I go through many rounds each week. When I exchange brass for reloads, what 4,000 rds. use to get me, now takes almost 8,000 rds. I stocked up during the last four months and will rotate through it and replace as it gets consumed. As of last year, I quit shooting my Summer and Fall Sporting Clay and Trap Leagues. Which I had been involved with for 9 years. The shotgun league boys are still upset with me. Hey, with gasoline, range fees, shot, lead and powder costs all increasing, not to mention the 'Trigger' burger and beers after. I had to give something up. I just enjoy pistol shooting better. Besides, if I fail to trophy, it's nobody's fault but mine.

I just ordered 1000 rdn of Federal, 308 , 168 gr bthp match. for basically a dollar a round. I know what you are thinking that it is too expensive but the other choices I saw on the same stuff was like 30 dollars for 20 of them. That was the best deal I could find and it was through Ammoman .com. I just needed to get some top quality ammo. If any one knows about a better deal for the same stuff ,please let me know. I can never have to much ammo.
