Kimber or Springfield for a 1911 in my opinion. That is unless you're looking to unload some big bucks. If that's the case, I'd go with one of the high end custom manufacturers.

I would recommend the Colt Commander also. I carry everyday a Colt Commander lightweight 45 ACP. A great gun and light to boot when you carry everyday. It has a 8 round magazine with 1 in the chamber that makes 9 rounds in the gun at all times. I shoot a 185 grain ammo in it as the 230 grain that is normal is a little heavy for this lightweigh gun. But, it handles great and is a true 1911
I also own and carry occasionally a M1991A1 Colt Commander Compact 45 ACP. A very nice gun and becuse of the heavy weight and small size it handles a full load of ammo quite well and it very accurate. This small gun holds 7 in the mag and 1 in the chamber.

I have a colt commander and a glock22 in 40 cal. I put stronger springs in on the glock which seems to take the snap down a notch or two. The colt fits my hand nicer which makes a big difference for accuracy.

I was just at one of my favorite gun store/hang outs today and was looking at a Berrata .40....my concealed weapon I carry almost most often that is, is my Tarus PT-145....it is double action but I do love it compactness and I love the .45 round.....I probably have put more than 500 rounds through it in these past years and must tell you it has never jammed on me....as for the world war proven .45 colt, I too agree it is the best.....but I like compact....and though other pistols carry more rounds I figure if you cannot get your target with the ten you have then your butt is in deep kimchee......but if I may ask a question....as for knock down power would the .40 cal beat the .45 cal.....any input would be great....as I was planning on trading my pt-145 for the berrata .40 as I loved the handle and the looks and it just felt so nice and right in my hand or have I just gotten to used to using my pt145....thanks

Pfc Sleeper,
Shot placement is vastly more important than caliber.
Either the 45 ACP or .40 Cal., which ever your most comfortable with your ability to effectively use. Personally, I like the .45. Do I carry smaller calibers? Yup. But that’s then I’m not transporting firearms to gun shows. There are arguments for both. The .45 probably would give you slightly better stopping power at the expense of magazine capacity and accuracy at longer range. The statisticians may want to correct me. But I believe that confrontations will take place within 21 feet and you better hit your tango in the first couple of rounds. The .40 caliber may have slightly less recoil, better accuracy and higher capacity. Other issues would include what kind of community are you going to be working in etc. I am a fan of stopping power. Figure out which one you are able to carry comfortably and use with proficiency, and then if you have more than one choice opt for the one with the most stopping power. Learn to shoot as well as you can. Fail to learn and neither caliber will make a difference my friend. Practice, practice, practice. Shot placement is what matters. When you have placement mastered, then it's a matter of which one feels best in your hand and points most naturally for you. Good luck partner.

To me "approach determines response", and I believe in two in the chest and one in the head....but now thats just how the good old US Army trained me some years ago....

40s... I own two smiths, one P99, and one XD. I would quickly advise anyone away from the smiths, mine look and feel cheap, my P99 never impressed me and I have as much money in it at the gunsmith than I did buying it NIB. But I wouldn't part with my XD for anything.... Good hunting.

Colts including the Commander are all very good weapons. But I would have to say that I preffer the Kimber. You get most of the extras right out of the box. I own two kimber's in .45 cal. , the 5 in. custom stainless and the 4 in. Pro carry also in stainless, and Have never had a missfire or jam even when useing hollow points even when shooting right from the box.

I don't have a Kimber, but every one I ever shot was fantastic! I'm a chance buyer, what can I get , when I have the extra cash; I'll take it even if I don't really like or want is. The closest I've gotten to a Kimber, Came when a Highway patrolman friend of mine was down sizing. $500.00 for me and the house payment was due. Envey is my monster....

I know that I am getting in this conversation late in the game, but I just purchased a Springfield Armory EMP .40. A little pricey at $1,100, but it is a fine handgun. All I had to do was have a gunsmith work on the trigger as it came from the factory with a 6.25 trigger pull. Now it has what I am used to a 3.75 crisp pull. But, so far I have shot 600 rounds through it and not a malfuntion one. It is ready to carry. This little compact .40 is a fine carry gun and very accurate once you get used to the short sight radius of the 3 inch barrel. I have carried a Dan Wesson custom .45 Commander for a year now and that is also a very fine gun. The DW is a hand fitted gun and tight as a custom Les Bear. With nearly 2500 rounds through it is still tight and accurate.
So, that is my input into the discussion. Two very fine carry guns, both accurate and malfunction free.

bullseye,
I have a PT-145 .45 cal Taurus...it is quite compact and I love it as it carries well concealed, as I always carry, have both a Utah and and Idaho CCW, Utah by the way is a far better on as it is recognized by more states, nonetheless, I have various other pistols, mostly 9mm but I love the .45 as I know if I ever need it it has the stopping power...but as to how this Country is pressing us in a myriad of ways, one being having to use a smaller caliber, i.e., .22 to practice, my opinion, and it may not mean much, is that when we practice with a smaller calliber we are not really helping ourselves...but I do not mean to offend, I am one also who will start soon to reload as I cannot afford ammo as I used to....I hardly ever shoot my .45 because the price....but I am very proficient with it....I guess what I am trying to say is that this economic downfall is touching all of us in places we never thought might be touched, the question is when will Americans wake and and touch back......by the way I wish I could get that Springfield like yours....I have a Springfield SAR-8, a very special .308 rifle...works excellently....
God Bless and God Bless this United States of AMERICA and our Troops

Hey folks, been gone again for some weeks, sorry. Life gets hecktic in retirement, ha.
But, the question was thrown out of which .40 would I chose? With the quality of .40's these days it is tough. But, I have a Springfiield XD Sub Compact .40, and it is a great pistol. I have shot around 1000 rounds through it with no complications whatsoever. The only problem is my wife tried it, and now she is shooting it most of the time. But, having a wife that is a shooting enthusiest is great , so, no complaints from me.
But, I have waited for a Springfield EMP .40 for many months. It finally came in, and it was not a disappointment at all. It is a terrific carry gun, and beings I am one that prefers a 1911 I have no had no problems with the handling of it from the time first out of the box. I have shot around 800 rounds through it, with no problems, except the trigger pull out of the box was heavier than I liked which was 7.7-8.3 pounds. So, my gunsmith tweeked the trigger and now it is the 3.5 pounds that I have all my 1911's.
The only thing that I had a little getting used to with both the XD Sub Compact and the EMP was the 3 inch barrel and the short sight radius. But, with both it took me around 150 rounds to get used to that part. I know many say that the difference between a Commander 4.25 inch barrel and the 3 inch is not that much. But, to me, it did make a difference at 25 yards for sure. At 10 yards not so much, but the longer distance did make a huge difference.
But, that is my choice and both are great guns, but, my EMP tops the list. The price is much higher than the XD, but, to me it is worth every penny of the difference.

Bullseye! Welcome back and it's great to see your post. You have fine taste in firearms. As I mentioned to Brad281 on the Home RnG Site, I trust my life, the lives of family and friends to my XD9. It's dependability, accurate and durable. My Son is saving up for a new carry gun and he's currently got his eye on a standard size EMP in 45ACP.
