Hi, probably a stupid question for a couple of reasons, as I would not want the ATF to be pi----ed at me...but are we able to cut a barrel that is well over the 16 1/2 inches by law......what I am trying to say am I having to file with the ATF any paperwork if I cut my barrel to the minimal length, I have a Rem 870 express and it's barrel is over 20 plus inches.....I been wanting to make a good type of riot shotgun, like the mossberg, etc.....and I do not really hunt for birds so would this be considered a conversion.... I enjoy the freedom of Idaho and the ability to have a variety of firearms without having to register every darn one of them as some States require.....but I have heard any type of change to any firearm is illegal....so as I am typing this I wonder about the AK47 and other guns where you can get folding stocks, black plastic type hand guards and pistol grips....would that not also be considered modification or whatever word the ATF uses.....I am to old to do something wrong and get my butt in trouble...not my thing....just a question I pose....I understand that no one can give me advise as though if I use it then they are to blame....gosh just asking a question lately worrys me as to who is listening or who wishes to missinturpt it....thanks

Specialist Sleeper,
For the record, I recommend that you purchase a factory manufactured short barrel and extended magazine kit for your 870. In addition, you want to check federal, state and local firearm laws first.
That said, minimum legal length is 18 inches. Stay to 18.5" just to be on the safe side. Measure from inside of the barrel. With the gun unloaded, action closed, put your tape measure down the barrel until it stops against the action and check barrel length this way. You can install a new bead by drilling and tapping for the old bead. However, a bead on a shortened barrel doesn't make much sense.
I am in no way advocating or condoning the modification of ANY firearm.

Chaindriven,
I would never NEVER put myself or my family in trouble by doing anything illegal...PERIOD....just wondered if it could be done....but after the posting last night I went to the Sportsmen Warehouse store here and found a nice Mossburg, as the salesman said, "for home defense", and I responded yep....anyways bought it....for a bit over 240.00.....it has the extended mag tube and it looks nice...hell ChainDriven I am to old and physically screwed up to do anything to go to jail...I like my freedom though sometimes I feel I am in jail with the wife./....heheheheheh...just kidding....she has been my wife and best friend for over 30 years....I have been lucky though we have had our moments as I am sure everyone does from time to time....

Specialist Sleeper, I have to be careful regarding my replies that pertain to the modification of firearms. I know you wouldn't do any thing illegal my friend. Congratulations on thirty years of marriage. As with any relationship it takes effort, communication and forgiveness.
